ACS800 is not one single drive. ACS800-01 wall-mounted drives, ACS800-04 modules, ACS800-07 cabinet drives, ACS800-17 regenerative drives, ACS800-37 low-harmonic drives and ACS800 multidrives each need a different replacement or modernization approach — this guide walks through ABB's published route for each.

ABB recommends modernizing or replacing aging ACS800 drives with a new-generation product. For several ACS800 families, ABB provides engineered modernization solutions based on ACS880 technology, but the correct route depends strongly on the ACS800 variant. ACS800 is not one single drive — ACS800-01 wall-mounted drives, ACS800-04 modules, ACS800-07 cabinet drives, ACS800-17 regenerative drives, ACS800-37 low-harmonic drives and ACS800 multidrives require different replacement or modernization approaches. Do not treat "ACS800 → ACS880" as one universal model swap.
ABB's July 2025 lifecycle announcement places ACS800-01/-U1/-04/-U4/-07/-U7 units in the Classic phase. For the listed 0.55–200 kW / 0.75–200 hp product types, ABB plans transfer to the Limited phase on 1 January 2030. ABB also states that new spare modules for ACS800-01/-U1 and ACS800-04 R2–R6 are planned to remain available during the Classic phase until the second half of 2028 — they will not be available as new spare modules in the Limited phase.
An original ACS800 spare can still be a valid short-term decision where availability, compatibility and downtime dominate. For long-term assets, ABB explicitly recommends modernization or replacement with a new-generation product.

ABB's current service description specifically says that existing ACS800-07, ACS800-17 and ACS800-37 single drives can be modernized with ACS880 digital technology without fully replacing the drive cabinet. This is an engineered service solution intended to reduce investment and downtime while keeping usable infrastructure.
ABB separately publishes an ACS800-to-ACS880 modernization solution for selected wind-converter families, stating compatibility with ACS800-77LC, ACS800-87LC, ACS800N-87LC and ACS800-67 converter families.

ABB's wind modernization publication reports benefits such as current-capacity headroom, newer IGBT/gate-driver technology, improved thermal performance, digital capability and current cybersecurity features. These claims apply to that engineered wind-converter modernization package and should not be generalized to every ACS800 replacement.
ABB does not publish a single universal ACS800→ACS880 order-number table for all ACS800 families. The examples below are verified legacy model strings for identification — exact ACS880 selection still depends on family, duty, voltage, current, regenerative/low-harmonic functionality, enclosure and options.

These are verified legacy model strings for identification — not one-to-one ACS880 replacements. We only add an exact ACS880 order number when ABB publishes that specific replacement relationship, or an ABB engineered modernization quotation confirms it.
Many ACS800 installations use legacy ABB fieldbus option modules. ABB's current legacy-fieldbus page confirms ACS800 compatibility for modules such as RPBA-01 (PROFIBUS), RETA-01/RETA-02 (Ethernet/PROFINET-related legacy interfaces), RECA-01 (EtherCAT), RDNA-01 (DeviceNet), RCNA-01 (ControlNet) and others. Do not assume the old option module transfers physically or that the PLC configuration remains unchanged on ACS880. Record the network protocol, adapter type, telegram/profile, node address and process data, then select the supported ACS880-generation adapter and revalidate the PLC/DCS interface.
ACS800 and ACS880 belong to different control generations. Existing ACS800 parameter backups and DriveWindow-era workflows should be treated as source documentation for the application, not files that can simply be loaded into an ACS880.
For ACS800-07/-17/-37 cabinet drives, ABB's modernization service may allow the existing cabinet to remain in use. For other replacement approaches, cabinet compatibility still requires engineering review: drive/module frame and mounting dimensions, busbar and power-cable arrangement, cooling-air path or liquid-cooling interfaces, input fuses/switchgear/contactors, brake-chopper/resistor or regenerative front-end requirements, EMC/harmonic-mitigation hardware, door controls and operator panel, safety circuits and STO architecture, and service access/module-removal space.
An ACS800-17 regenerative drive and an ACS800-37 low-harmonic drive should not be replaced by a standard ACS880-01 merely because the motor kW matches — the line-side functionality is part of the original system requirement.
